Pair of 18th Century Creamware Dishes Hand Painted circa 1785

About the Item

We are pleased to offer this pair of oval-shaped 18th century creamware dishes painted with lively enamels depicting fruits. Made by Turner in the last quarter of the 18th century these sweet dishes show hand-painted fruits in the centre and brown painted rims one plate shows plums, the other features cherries and grapes. On both ends of each dish is a crest featuring an arm holding a scroll. These dishes are particularly graceful in size, they could be placed easily on a small side table, or as a pair on a mantle. While many round dishes were made for dinner or dessert few shapes were made and survived. Each dish marked on the reverse "Turner". Dimensions: 11 inches wide x 6.25 inches long Condition: Excellent Price: $950 for the pair Background of Turner: Each dish is stamped "Turner," referring to the English potter John Turner (and, later, his sons John Jr. and William) who worked in Northern Staffordshire. Turner pottery was in production from 1762 to 1806. Its principle products were high quality stoneware and creamware, such as our two dishes. Their manufactures have been compared favourably with those of Josiah Wedgwood. Josiah Wedgwood was both a friend and a commercial rival of John Turner the elder, the first notable potter in the family. John Turner the elder was apprenticed in 1753 to the Staffordshire potter Daniel Bird. By 1756, he was established in a partnership with R. Banks, at Stoke-on-Trent. In 1759 or 1762, he relocated to Lane End (now part of Longton). The earliest piece reliably attributed to him is a 1762 teapot. In 1775, he installed a Newcomen engine at his pottery. In 1780, he was one of the founders of the New Hall Works at Stoke.[1] About 1780, he discovered a vein of fine clay (called "peacock marl") at Dock Green or Green Dock, Edensor, Derbyshire, which he used to make a wide variety of wares of a "cane" color. He also made blue glazed pottery similar to Japanese porcelain. He was appointed potter to the Prince of Wales in 1784, and some of his wares are marked with the Prince of Wales's feathers. Background of Creamware: Creamware is the name given to a type of earthenware pottery which is made from white clays from Dorset and Devonshire combined with an amount of calcined flint. Creamware was first produced in England some time before 1740.
