Walter & John Barnard Gilt Sterling Silver 1892 Victorian Punch Bowl Centerpiece

About the Item

Walter and John Barnard sterling silver punch bowl or wine cooler, with curvilinear, fluted motifs adorning the base and body, gilt inside, from 1892 (Victorian era). It measures 11 1/2'' diameter by 8'' in height, weighs 33.7 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. Possibly the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world, the origin of this silversmithing firm were established by Anthony Nelme in the 17th century. There were several successive owners to the firm, including Francis Nelme, Thomas Whipham, Thomas Whipham Jr., Charles Wright, Henry Chawner, Edward Barnard, John and Rebecca Emes, Edward Barnard II, and John, William, Walter Barnard. The firm was converted into a limited liability company in 1910 under the style Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd. In 1977 Edward Barnard & Sons Limited became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham Ltd. Barnard silver is in the permanent collection of prestigious museums, including the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.     Walker & Hall, English sterling silver punch bowl set with original glass liners, made in Birmingham in 1930, with beautiful curvilinear pierced motifs and adorned with vine motifs on the rims, consisting of a punch bowl measuring 8 1/4'' in diameter by 5 1/8'' in height and 4 cups, measuring 4 3/8'' in diameter by 3 1/2'' in height. Total silver weight is 33 troy ounces and hallmarks are shown. Walker & Hall was an important English silversmith established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker. The business was later joined by Henry Hall, and became Walker & Hall in 1853. The factory was at Howard Street in Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holborn Viaduct, London.     This is a large gorgeous antique Victorian sterling silver punch bowl bearing the makers mark of the renowned silversmith Walter Barnard with hallmarks forLondon 1892 and retailed by Gibson & Co, Belfast. Just before his death in 1827, William's brother-in-law Arthur Crawford in a pact with his father, agreed to break the entail on the estate in favour of his sister Mabel Fridiswid CRAWFORD, and William SHARMAN was authorised, by Royal Licence to assume the surname of CRAWFORD in addition to, and after SHARMAN, and to bear the arms of Crawford quarterly with those of Sharman, thus beginning the SHARMAN-CRAWFORD line.     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver sugar bowl; an addition to our dining silverware collection This exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian silver sugar bowl, in sterling standard, has a compressed circular rounded form. The incurved body of this antique silver sugar bowl is embellished with impressive chased scrolling leaf decoration. One side of the bowl is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a talbot's head collared. The upper rim is encompassed with a chased leaf decorated border. This Victorian sterling silver bowl is fitted with two exceptional chased decorated C scroll handles with further scrolling leaf decoration enveloping the sockets and a floral motif to each handpiece. The bowl is supported by a circular spreading foot ornamented with chased floral and foliate decoration. This exceptional English silver sugar bowl retains the original gilded interior.     An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English sterling silver sugar sifter spoon and bowl - boxed; an addition to our silver teaware collection. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver gilt teaware set consists of a sugar bowl and sifter spoon. The bowl has a circular rounded form to a circular spreading foot. The surface of the bowl is embellished with exceptional chased floral ornamentation accented with scroll designs, all on a matte background. The decoration to the bowl incorporates a putto* design to one side and a scrolling leaf bordered cartouche to the other, displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a unicorn before trees. The upper portion of this exceptional bowl is encircled with a broad plain border and the rim of the foot is encompassed with an applied decorated border. The exceptional sugar sifter ladle is embellished with further putto and scrolling leaf ornamentation, reflecting the design to that of the bowl.
