About the Item

A solid silver and crystal centerpiece of an impressive scale comprised of a hand raised, heavily chased solid silver base in the Rococo Revival style (hallmarked for Vienna 13 loth (813 purity) and for 1836) with a later hand-cut heavy crystal bowl. The base of this piece is a masterwork of silver smithing, this is not embossed but completely created by hand and at no point on the design, does the motif repeat, but yet the whole design is contained within a symmetrical Silhouette of a graduated knop footed stand. The crystal bowl is heavily hand cut and is probably a 20th century replacement but of a sympathetic shape, and of similar origin to the base. One tooth on the picoted edge has been polished to remove a minor chip but this is only noticeable with very close inspection. The Stand does not have any repairs and there is very little wear to the decoration, which is very crisp, as seen in the photographs. As is typical in this type of work, if you hold the base up to the light there are small pin holes in the silver. This is not from wear to the high points of the design; these are actually created during the making process and are located in the deepest parts of the design, where the silver has been hammered thinnest. These are not defects or manufacturing flaws and do not affect the integrity or stability of the piece and are mentioned just for accuracy. I doubt you would be able to find anyone who could tackle so competently, such a skilled and complex design, should you wish to commission a similar item today. Silver base total weight 1012 grms.
