Gustaf Janson, Swedish Art Deco Centerpiece, Silvered Bronze and Ebony

About the Item

A very decorative and unique silvered bronze and ebony centerpiece made as a prototype by Gustaf Janson (1892-1979), for the Swedish court appointed, jeweler C.G Hallberg, Made around 1925-1930, in the Swedish Grace or Art Deco style. This prototype never came into production due to the production costs. Gustaf Janson was born in Lindesberg in 1892 and moved to Stockholm in 1904. After elementary school, he entered a five-year sculptor's apprenticeship and at the same time attended a technical evening school from 1908 for three years. In 1914 he graduated from the Higher Art School, after which he was employed by the sculptor Carl Eldh (1873-1954) In 1915 he was employed by Herman Bergman's foundry in Stockholm. In the same year, Jansson was awarded the commercial college and the Swedish Craftsmen's Association's travel scholarship. He left for Paris after the World War I, to study sculpture for Emil Bourdelle at the Académie de la Grand Chaumiére. After returning home, he became an artistic collaborator of architect Elis Bergh at Royal Court Jeweler C.G Hallberg. He stayed with Hallberg for nearly 40 years. In 1958, Jansson was elected member of the Stockholm Goldsmiths Association founded by Erik Fleming. Provenance: Gustaf Janson Estate, inherited within the family to present day. Swedish Grace is a style orientation within Swedish design and arts and crafts from the 1920s. The design language, which can be found on, for example, furniture, works of art, etc. is characterized by austere elegance, created through superficial decoration on simple forms with smooth surfaces. The objects were often made of exclusive materials and in complicated techniques that required skilled craftsmen. The architecture from the same period is usually called Nordic classicism. The concept: The term Swedish Grace was coined by the English architecture critic Philip Morton Shand when, in The Architectural Review, he reviewed the modernist Stockholm exhibition in 1930 and stated that the explanation for Sweden having been able to establish itself so quickly and successfully as a design nation during the 1920s was the feeling for artistic quality and Grace.
