Viennese Enameled Boat, Gilt Silver and Enamel, 19th Century

About the Item

Viennese enameled centerpiece. Gilt silver and enamel. 19th century. The four wheels that raise it present / display shafted axes, worked with simplified vegetal forms that interbreed. These, the railing of the deck, the rigging of rope, the mast, the vegetable decorations of the hull, the fuse, the banners, and the human figures are made of gilded silver. A man stands at the bow, others more humbly dressed are at various points on the ship, and under the canopy with turned columns stands a lady sitting on a throne. Other areas of the work are made of enamels, of high quality: the candle has an idealized scene with human figures on the obverse and some vegetable scrolls around a flying bird, carrying a shell on its legs; the roof of the baldachin also has some idealized scenes carried out by pairs (one on each front), and the interior shows curved lines. These same types of scenes are on each of the four outer fronts of the ship's hull, while in the interior it has a scroll similar to that of the sail, and, again, scenes on the sides. The silver elements show a clear classicist influence and a movement reminiscent of Baroque works. However, both table centers and ship-shaped clocks (some with mechanisms that moved the figures) were made as early as the fifteenth century: the "Mechanical Galleon" of the British Museum in London was dated between 1580-1590, and was probably carried out in Augsburg; another example of the Kunstkammer of Vienna was made in Augusta in 1585. The piece shows a mixture of elements typical in different styles: already mentioned the decoration in silver gilded classicist with Baroque memory; The scenes recall the "fêtes galantes" from the 18th century's Rococo art, but their compositions present some tones and forms with a certain air of 19th century Neoclassicism (harmony, symmetry, gestures with decorum, colors). In this sense, it is possible to relate it to the resurgence of styles of the past that took place in the nineteenth century. In Vienna, in particular, a large number of works were made in silvered bronze or silver with a notable prominence of the enamel (which, moreover, stood out for its high quality due to technical advances in the casting of metal and glass): turtles, Clocks, boats, boxes shaped like ships to sail ... followed specially preserved models of the Renaissance, varying the forms and decorations to adapt them to the taste of the time. This centerpiece recalls other outstanding works such as those of Ludwig Politzer of the late 19th century, works preserved in the Kuntistorisches Musem of Vienna, the Victoria and Albert of London, etc. Weight: 625 gr."
