About the Item

"Dust makes thirst and since humans are made of dust, we should drink day and night". Staub macht Durst Und da der Mensch aus Staub gemacht muss er saufen Tag und Nacht. Antique set of eleven 19th century German earthenware steins / beer mugs / tankards with applied mask handle, distributed as a promotional advertising / sales incentive by F.A. Schwill & Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Likely produced by the Hugo Thuemler Maufacturing Co - Representation of Gambrinus on the top of the handle on these steins has been seen on others produced by Thuemler. Gambrinus is a legendary European culture hero celebrated as an icon of beer, brewing, joviality, and joie de vivre. Typical representations in the visual arts depict him as a rotund, bearded duke or king, holding a tankard or mug, and sometimes with a keg nearby. "The F.A. Schwill & Son Company was a supplier of brewer's supplies and grain in Cincinnati, Ohio from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. From 1905 until 1918, The F.A. Schwill & Son Company had a retail store, selling glassware, hotel and restaurant china, and bottlers' supplies." "Hugo Thuemler was born in Germany in 1847. By 1894, he was living in Rochester, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1898 he was recorded as running a novelty, china & glass decoration company in Rochester. By 1901 he had relocated his studio to Sewickley, again near Pittsburgh, together with a sales outlet at 1507 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh. The majority of his business was supply of custom transfer decorated brewery steins and mugs to the breweries who used them liberally for publicity purposes. He did however supply other items, such as root beer mugs, whiskey jugs and many commemorative pieces, again all transfer decorated. He died in 1908, The company appears to have been omitted from the Pittsburg directories after this time. However steins were issued until at least 1913."
