Blue and White Chinoiserie Plate, Delft, 1650-1670
About the Item
Blue and white plate with a chinoiserie landscape with two sitting Chinese figures, within a double circle. The back of the plate is painted with the number 5, and the foot rim is pierced. The decoration is inspired by Chinese porcelain from the period of the last Ming emperor Chongzhen (1628-1644).
Oriental landscapes with Chinese figures were frequently painted on Delftware in the second half of the seventeenth century. This type of decoration is mainly executed on dishes, lobed dishes, ewers, vases and pots and to a lesser extent on small plates and bowls. Some of this Delftware is still wrongly attributed to a factory in the German town of Frankfurt.
Condition: The usual minor edge damage, as to be expected from pottery of this age. These are usually caused by metal plate hanger.
