Ceramic Tile INA-CASA Italy 1949-1963

About the Item

In the years of post-war reconstruction, the districts built under the Ina-Casa plan (1949-1963) constitute both in large cities and in provincial centers, the most valuable and significant intervention of popular residential building on a national scale, still unmatched today. The plan, also known as Piano Fanfani, then head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, was established by Law 28 February 1949. Measures to increase workers' occupation, facilitating the construction of houses for workers. Some of these houses were designed by Gio Ponti. The unmistakable recognizability was confirmed by the presence of polychrome ceramic tiles, bearing the words INA-CASA, and which were placed in correspondence with the access doors to the stairs. Elements of particular artistic value to which also important post-war artists and ceramists worked, including Burri, Morbiducci, De Laurentiis, Kowaliska, Tramonti, Scanavino and Gambone.
