Contemporary Japanese stoneware ceramic vase by Morino Hiroaki Taimei

About the Item

Morino Taimei (1934), also known as Taimei Hiroaki, draws from his traditional heritage and infuses it with a modern spirit. His father, a respected potter, sent him to study ceramics under the great but rather conservative Tomimoto Kenkichi and Fujimoto Yoshimichi. It was his time in Chicago, during the 1960s, that broadened his references and gave him a window into international trends. While still mostly consisting of fully functional vessels, much of Taimei's work follows the Tokyo tradition of ceramic sculpture that established itself in the 1940s. His use of various technically challenging pouring methods and glazes have been noted. He has been recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit, the highest national award given to cultural actors in Japan. Item includes original Tomobako box
