Folk Art Face Jug by Chester Hewell

About the Item

Chester Hewell grotesque face jug. Artist signed and dated 1994. Drippy monochromatic glaze. Measures 10.75"H. Chester Hewell: Seven generations of Hewells have passed down the Craft from the pottery's humble beginnings in 1850 all the way to today, when four generations of Hewells work side by side in the Gillsville business, ensuring that this remarkable line of folk potters remains unbroken. Harold "Bull" Hewell (born in 1926) is the current patriarch of the clan, which includes his wife Grace Nell (1933), son Chester (1950), grandsons Matthew (1972), and Nathaniel (1976) and two quickly leaning apprentices, great-grandchildren Eli (1998) and Susannah (2002). Chester's wife Sandra handles the business side of the ever-diversifying operation. SOURCE: Hewell's Pottery Inc.
