About

"Homme Enlever Par Morphee," a French art nouveau period ceramic vessel modelled by James Vibert for the Clement Massier manufactury. Signed "J. Vibert," circa 1899. Very rare form.

Clement Massier, member of a family of potters, is credited with reviving the ceramics industry in Vallauris, France. He is best known for his mastery of iridescent and lustre glazes. Swiss born James Vibert (1897-1942) was a sculptor known as one of the precursors of the Symbolist movement in Switzerland. He briefly moved to France in 1891 and aligned himself with the French Symbolists, an aesthetic which is evidenced in this magnificent work.
