About

A glazed earthenware vase by the modernist French ceramic artist Gilbert Valentin (1928-2001) with a dynamic, bird-like form. A master of glazes, Valentin uses a burnt orange glaze against a gritty black ground to create a strong, abstract design. Clearly marked "G. Valentin Les Archanges Vallauris" with the winged Archanges pottery logo.

For more information on Valentin's work see French Pottery of the 1950s by Pierre Staudenmeyer, pp 302-7. Valentin's "Les Archanges" pottery showroom in Vallauris and the artist at work are shown in the last photos.
