High Tea Pot by Studio Wieke Somers, 2003

About the Item

This daring, contemporary design classic turns the polite activity of tea drinking on its head. The Rotterdam-based Studio Weiki Somers—one of today’s brightest and most poetic design stars—surprises us by modeling a teapot on the shape of a pig’s skull. The studio originally designed this piece for a project called Deliciously Decadent; Somers herself defines decadence as the moment “where the tasty and the unsavory, the harmful and the delightful, are no longer discernible from one another.” The High Tea Pot is included in the permanent collections of many museums including the V&A in London and the MoMA in New York. Wieki Somers and Dylan van den Berg studied at Design Academy Eindhoven in the late ’90s. Since the establishment in 2003 the studio has earned international recognition for the way it introduces extraordinary fantasy in everyday objects. Through the development of a deep sensitivity for materials combined with technological detailing the studio aims to provide an enlightened reading of our environment. Through this restless experimentation with practical objects – their shapes, material and meaning, the way they are made and the way they are used – the studio’s work questions our aesthetic impulse in a subtle and often contradictory manner. Studio Wieki Somers undertakes commissions for international manufacturers, museums and galleries
