About the Item

Magnificent ceramic pottery from Vallauris, handmade, representing a dish with thistle flower patterns. The thistle is an ancient symbol of courage and sun protection. In a Christian context, the thistle symbolizes the passion of Christ and the Virgin Mary. In the south of France, the thistle is considered the "flower of the sun", it is also given another name, "witch's grass", which is associated with ancient ideas that wizards cannot look at the sun. That is why the thistle, a symbol of the sun, reliably protects the house from evil spirits. Period: XXth circa: 1950 - 1960 Dimensions: diameter: 45cm - thickness: 3cm Signed: MBESSONE Between 1949 and 1954, Marius Bessone will study both industrial technique for architecture and ceramic decoration. He will open his own workshop where, from that moment on, he will test different processes such as crystallization, reliefs on brown tones and volcanic effects with a lightly colored grid. He will participate in almost all the Vallauris biennials as well as in prestigious exhibitions across France and Europe. He opened a workshop in Vallauris, with his wife Huguette, in 1954. Culinary pottery, a “historic” production, from Vallauris declined in the interwar period. The arrival of Picasso sets off a decisive turning point and will create a notable effervescence. Thus, following Picasso, other famous artists such as Marc Chagall, Edouard Pignon, Anton Prinner, Victor Brauner, were introduced to ceramics in Vallauris. At the same time, the young people, including Marius Bessone, most of them from art schools, who continue to settle in Vallauris, will each create, through their different personalities, an extremely rich artistic home. utility are still very present, but this new generation is also gradually turning to more sculptural forms and also to architecture.
