"Leaping Antelope Dish", Rare, Early work by Waylande Gregory for Cowan
About the Item
This lovely oblong dish features one of the classic subjects of high style Art Deco design -- the leaping antelope -- but in other respects it is highly unusual. It is an early work of Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery, before he struck out on his own in the 1930s, and it is finished with a striking, speckled glaze in a rich, burnt sienna color, with a touch of green in the depths of the dish. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums. The dish shows the Cowan mark on the bottom.
