Modern Set of Three Faenza Ceramic Cactus Vases

About the Item

Beautiful set of Faenza ceramics from the 1950s. They represent a subject as original as interesting: cactus plants placed inside a ceramic vase! These small masterpieces are the work of an important Italian ceramics factory: "A. Farina & Figlio" founded in 1876 by Achille Farina (1804-1879) in Faenza. It should be remembered that the city of Faenza was so important in the production of ceramics that it gave rise to the internationally recognised name of 'Faience'. The "A. Farina & Figlio" factory was founded in 1876 by Achille Farina (1804-1879) in Faenza. On his death, the management of the factory passed to his son Lodovico, who combined the production of artistic ceramics with industrial production. In 1903 the company changed its name to "Fabbriche Riunite di Ceramica" (brand name F.R.C.), Cesare Contavalli was appointed technical director and Tomaso Dal Pozzo artistic director, who held the position until 1906. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Domenico Baccarini from Faenza and some of the ceramists belonging to his "cenacle", Ercole Drei, Giovanni Gulmanelli and Achille Calzi, among others, collaborated with the factory and the kilns of the former "Farina" produced works of great artistic and technical importance that made it famous throughout the world. In 1906, the artistic direction of the factory passed to Achille Calzi, son of the ceramist Giuseppe, who was also employed by the factory. In 1910, the factory participated in the Universal Expo in Brussels and opened an exhibition shop in Milan, in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. A year later, the factory passed to the new owner Massimo Popper and took the name "Manifattura Ceramica Faentina" (M.C.F.). In 1914 the artistic direction was entrusted to Vincenzo Savini, who was soon replaced by Aldo Zama, and the old factory trademark "Farina", consisting of two crossed triangles with an F in the centre, was revived. The factory remained active until 1944 when it was destroyed by bombing. Among the artists and craftsmen working at the former 'Farina' factories, in addition to those already mentioned, we can mention: Celestina Borghi, Riccardo Gatti and Pietro Melandri Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts.
