About Bitossi (Manufacturer)
Like a Fellini movie, the ceramics of this famed Italian company embody a creative spectrum that ranges from the playful and earthy to the high-minded and provocative. Based in Florence, Bitossi Ceramiche draws on craft traditions that date back to the 1500s. These find expression in the artisanal vases and animal figures by the firm’s longtime art director Aldo Londi, as well as the colorful, totemic vessels designed by the high priest of postmodernism, Ettore Sottsass.
The company was incorporated by Guido Bitossi in 1921, though the family began making art pottery in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s, Londi came aboard, bringing with him a mindset that respected time-honored craft, yet looked also to the future. On the one hand, Londi’s perspective fostered the making of Bitossi’s popular whimsical animal figures, hand-shaped and -carved and finished in a rich azure glaze known as “Rimini Blue.”
But with his other hand, Londi reached out to thoughtful, experimental designers such as Sottsass. Starting in the 1950s, some 20 years before he founded the Memphis Postmodern design...

Set of five charming ceramic plates with rich cobalt blue decorations on a white background; three plates have a diameter of cm.30 and are the two with both painted on the bottom a little bird surrounded by flowers and vine shoots but with different border decorations, the other is the one with a star painted in the center and a flowery border; the other two have a diameter of cm.33 and have a pomegranate design in the center surrounded by vine shoots, both again with different borders. They were all painted exclusively by hand and faithfully reproduce ancient Umbrian decorations from the 1700s; made between 1950 and 1954 in a small artisan workshop in Deruta (Perugia-Italy). In 1919 the Albanian Adolfo Rossello, in partnership with a group of financiers, Eng. Guglielmo Camogli, the honorable Michelino Poggi, the lawyer Costantino Barile and Andrea Seitun, returns to his hometown and opens an artisan ceramic factory called 'Alba Docilia', the ancient Roman name of Albisola. In 1922 the 'Alba Docilia', directed at the time by the Roman painter Mario Gambetta, won a medal at the Diano Marina Exhibition and since 1923 has regularly participated in the Milan Trade Fair. In 1923 the factory was transformed into a cooperative company and the following year Adolfo Rossello and his children Angela Teresa, Vittorina, Francesco Adolfo and Pietro became the sole owners. In 1925 the factory took part in the 2nd Monza Biennale. In 1928 the company is present at the Artisan Exhibition of Savona and participates in the Exhibition of Artisan Products of the Albisolese Week of 1933 and '34. Also in 1934, the manufacture's production was presented at the exhibitions in Tripoli, Leipzig and Vienna. In 1938 he was present at the Ligurian Ceramics Exhibition in Rome and at the Florence Handicraft Fair, which he also participated in in 1956 and 1958. Among the ceramists who collaborated with the company between the first and second post-war periods, among others appear: Virio da Savona, Guglielmo Bozzano, Romeo Bevilacqua, Cerruti, Carlo Frumento, Benedetto Gaggero, Ida Milani, Amleto Modolo and Ivos Pacetti...
