Denmark, 1950s.
Per Linnemann-Schmidt and his wife Annelise Linnemann-Schmidt founded Palshus Stentøj (Stentøj is Danish for Stoneware) in 1949 in the Copenhagen suburb of Sengeløse in Denmark. The studio name was put together by their names P(er), A(nnelise), L(innemann), S(chmidt) and HUS (Danish for house). Per had a strong artistic background, having graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen in the late 1930s and subsequently working as a sculptor, like his father Danish sculptor Willie Wulff. The simple glazes and forms were a combination of Japanese and Scandinavian influences, often using typically Scandinavian earth tones in blues, browns and beige. Per was self taught in glaze technology and perfected the now iconic Palshus hare's fur glazes. In the 1950s and 60s, Palshus also started working with textured clay (chamotte) and impressed, geometric patterns along with more roughly textured, glossy glazes. Palshus Pottery closed in 1972, three years after a tragic car accident that caused Annelise's death at the age of 51. Today, their granddaughter who was named after her grandmother, Annelise, continues the tradition of sculpture.
