In Portugal, the figure of the rooster is very common due to a 17th century folk tale, The Legend of the Rooster of Barcelos. It tells the story of a dead rooster's miraculous intervention in proving the innocence of a man who had been falsely convicted and sentenced to death. This colorful enameled and hand-painted ceramic rooster wine decanter/pitcher originated from Portugal, drawing inspiration from that legendary tale. Molded and crafted by the wine company Real Vinícola, the vessel's body depicts a stylized rooster with simplified, flat planes of color representing the plumage. An opening at the head forms the spout for pouring, while a handle on the back provides grip. Vibrant hues ornament the surface with a contemporary Pop Art aesthetic. Underneath can be found the manufacturer's stamp and a mark attesting to its country of origin.
Founded as Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal in 1889, Real Vinícola is based in northern Portugal. Although the company was established as a wine producer, some ceramic pieces like this one can now be found as collectibles.
