Quentin Bell Attributed Stoneware Elizabethan Lady’s Head

About the Item

A very unusual midcentury handcrafted stoneware sculpture of an Elizabethan lady’s head, possibly Elizabeth I, wearing a period hat and ruff collar attributed to renowned artist and writer Quentin Bell (British, 1910-1996). The stoneware shoulder length head stands on an oval base with the large ruff collar overshadowing the base with a well formed face with hair and wearing a folded lace work hat with ribbon like applications. The figure has been hand painted in naturalistic tones and is very well detailed. The hollowed out head appears to have a lozenge mark to the base however this is indistinctly marked. Provenance: from a large collection which was acquired in the British Art Market. A large element of the collection was sold immediately and acquired by a serious collector however we had retained a few pieces which we are now offering for sale. In good condition with a small chip to one of the protruding elements of the lacework hat.
