Rare Bernard Rooke Vintage Studio Ceramic Vase

About the Item

Born in 1938, Bernard Rooke studied at the Ipswich School of Art before moving on to the Goldsmiths' College, London and it was there, in his final year, that he decided to take up pottery. In 1960 he set up his own workshop in Forest Hill, London. Progressive designs were very acceptable in London at that time, and Rooke applied his efforts to making pieces of a sculptural nature. The early pieces were mainly fashioned by hand using coils and blocks. Rooke found that while a work might not find a market as a piece of sculpture if made into a lamp base it was more readily acceptable to the public. The lamp bases were, indeed, popular and have proved a mainstay until the present day. This piece is not one of those, however.

  • Unique Piece--Maarten Baas Burned Ikea Chair from Where There's Smoke Exhibition
    By Maarten Baas
    Located in Hamden, CT
Maarten Baas (1978) is a Dutch designer and a graduate of the famed Design Academy Eindhoven (2002). He is of the generation that followed immediately after the breakthrough 1993 landmark exhibition in Milan - Droog Design.- an assemblage of work produced by independent Dutch design studios working throughout the Netherlands. Addressing mostly ordinary domestic articles so intelligently and aesthetically re-thought and re=worked. that they reverberated throughout all of Art and Design, Maarten Baas was influenced greatly by the fresh and imaginative free-thinking which was taught at the school. Today Baas is considered one of the most influential designers working across multiple disciplines, deviating from conventional art processes while working with conventional art materials such as clay, metal, wood, and video. Baas is known for his conceptual, metaphorical, and most often amusing results which trigger the viewer to reconsider their own ambivalence toward the material world. This chair was commissioned by MOSS gallery in New York in 2004 and was offered as part of a solo exhibition called Where There's Smoke...
