Set of Nine Hand-Painted Faience Dinner Plates by Stig Lindberg

About

This set of faience dinner plates (nine altogether, though only eight appear in the group photograph) was created by Stig Lindberg in the late 1940s to celebrate the various regions of Sweden. All of the paintings are done in Stig Lindberg's distinctive style. Lappland is represented by a reindeer with a member of the Sami people of Scandinavia's far north (wearing a distinctive four-winds cap), Småland by a glass-blower, Dalarna by a Dalecarlian horse and rider, Norrland by a river full of logs, Stockholm by a harbor full of fishing nets, and Skåne by surrealistic imagery that I am unable to explain. There are six designs in all, with three of the nine plates being duplicates (though not identical duplicates, as each was individually hand-painted). These plates can be mounted for decorating a wall, or used to serve food. In my many years of collecting the work of Stig Lindberg, I have only rarely found plates from this group for sale. Each plate is fully signed with the Gustavsberg Studio mark, and the monogram of the Stig Lindberg assistant who actually did the painting.
