Two polychrome lightning plates Delft, 1700-1730 The Peacock pottery Mark: D(P)AW 9 The dish has a small flange and is painted in polychrome with the so-called lightning decor. The center is decorated with an irregular shaped cartouche, filled with flowers and grass. The border is divided into three sections with leaves and floral branches, separated by three cartouches filled with floral motifs. The decor takes its name from the hook- and zigzag-shaped blue and red stripes in the border. Dimensions: diameter 23,2 cm / 9.13 in. The decor is derived from a polychrome Imari decor on Japanese porcelain from the late 17th century. This decor is painted mainly in blue, red and gold, sometimes complemented by green, yellow, aubergine or black. The 'lightning bolts' were winding trees on the Japanese originals. The Delft plates have essentially the same colour scheme as Japanese Imari porcelain with the yellow pigment replacing the gold.
