Attractive Manganese and Polychrome Delft Bristol Temple Backplate, circa 1745

Charming pair of plates with rare and desirable features of delftware; fluting, bianco-sopra-bianco border and in polychrome including manganese From a Bristol collection and originally made in Bristol Pair of 18th century bianco-sopra-bianco delftware plates, made at Redcliff Back, under Richard Frank. The press-moulded fluted border and scalloped rim is decorated with repeated foliate designs in a style known as ‘bianco sopra bianco‘, or ‘white on white’. Although inspired by the incised patterns found on the rims of Chinese export porcelain, the name alludes to the use of this decoration on sixteenth-century Italian maiolica at Faenza. Very good 18th Century English, probably Bristol, charger depicting a church, cottage and wooded landscape with flocks of birds overhead.

Finely painted Delft charger depicting an imaginary Japanese landscape set with a weeping cherry tree and a tea house, with a lovely use of mustard, teal and red.

The polychrome wine jug has an ovoid body on a low spreading foot, a conical neck with spout and a handle with a scroll finish. The jug is painted in purple, yellow and green with a continuous chinoiserie landscape with three Chinese figures. A band with scroll ornaments and circles is applied to the shoulder just below the neck, the neck itself is decorated with two stylized flowers and scroll ornaments. The handle is decorated with stripes and scroll ornaments. Dimensions: height 19 cm / 7.48 in. Multi-coloured chinoiserie landscapes on Delftware were only made for a short period of time, roughly between about 1680 and 1690.
