Delft Blue and White Dish with a Flute-Playing Putto, the Netherlands, 1660-1700

About the Item

Blue and white dish with a putto. The Netherlands, 1660-1700 The blue and white dish has a wide, spreading flange, and is painted in the centre with a walking, flute-playing putto in a simplified landscape in a double circle. The well is unpainted. The decor on the flange is composed of ovals and striped triangles, connected by small arched segments. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre. Dimensions: diameter 31 cm / 12.20 in. A blue and white majolica dish with running putto with horn and staff is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Perhaps the decor on the dish is an allegory of hearing.
