French Faïence Hand Painted Romantic Courtship Grisaille & Cirage Plates, S/6

About the Item

A charming set of six French faïence hand painted plates, circa 1880-1900 – a reissue of the original 18th century Sceaux mold. Marked on the verso, Sceaux 1777. Sceaux was a faiënce and porcelain works, founded near Paris. The factory was in production from 1748-1794. Molds and patterns were often sold when factories disbanded. The plates are skillfully painted with centers showing six different figural romantic courtship scenes rendered underglaze in grisaille and cirage, a style that uses varying shades of gray and yellow. The rims show a floral garland cold-painted in bright yellow and black. The mold has a basketweave rim and the center shows pleating. Each plate is signed by the artist. Measures: 10 in. diameter x 1 in. height A hand painted Sceaux mark over an indecipherable impressed mark. Showing the light wear associated with faïence. One plate shows a shallow sliver on the rim. Minor wear to the rear footings.
