A set of four, two-handled lug bowls with their lids, eight pieces in all. A French cuisine de campagne is not complete without at least one service of lug bowls for a favorite soupe aux oignons recipe. The sujet ordinaire of a Bretonne, the woman, or Breton, the man, is painted in the bowl’s interior and the bold blue lining and floral spray are shown on the outside. Each bowl has a pair of lug handles sponge glazed in cobalt blue. The knobbed lids also show a figure with floral sprays, the top knob is sponged blue as well. The bowls are footed and pierced for hanging. Marked Henriot Quimper France, the bowls are # 176, the lids are # 520, circa 1940-1960. Each piece, with the lid is 4″ H including the knob. The bowls are 2.5″ H, 7″ W including the handles, an interior of 5″ diameter. The lids are 5.25″ diameter. The lids do not fit tightly as is expected to allow room for the melted cheese & bread, the usual light wear seen in faience, a stable, faint, hairline to one lid.
