Eleven Crazy Cow Dinner Plates Hand Painted by Minton England Circa 1820

About the Item

This set of eleven plates is hand-painted in a pattern called "Crazy Cow," known for its animated and whimsical design. These beautifully painted, lively dinner plates each measure 9.75 inches in diameter. The dishes were made by Minton in England circa 1820 using pearl-glazed creamware (pearlware). The pattern features a central rondel with a bewildered cow standing against a backdrop of red leaves. This is a brightly colored, eye-catching pattern. A vibrant blue line encircles the center rondel. Around the center roundel, we see large red chrysanthemums, plenty of green leaves, and, on the border, six delicate blue cornflowers with red centers. The Crazy Cow pattern was inspired by 18th-century Chinese designs that featured a dragon-like mythical Kylin in the central rondel. Minton made the first Crazy Cow plates in the factory's first period from 1796 to 1816. In Chinese lore, a Kylin only appeared during the reign of a just Emperor, making the pattern optimistic. The mythical kylin can also be found on Worcester's 18th and early 19th century pattern "Kylin in Compartments." Dimension: 9.75" in diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $4,800 Background of Minton's Crazy Cow Pattern: For an image of Minton's pattern 106, see a lobed dessert plate on pg 34 of R Cumming and M Berthoud's Minton Patterns of the First Period Thomas Minton and Joseph Paulson founded Minton & Paulson in 1796. Most early Minton decorative patterns were hand painted in on-glaze polychrome enamels. The vast majority of the production was earthenware.
