About the Item

A splendid set of 8 dinner plates from the old stock sold through Gillman Collamore & Co., 5th Avenue, NYC during the Belle Epoche, when luxury goods were at their heyday. The set was made for G-C & Co by Coalport of England, and the date mark on back tells us they are sometime between 1891- about 1910 or so. A bit of history tells us Gilman Collamore & Co., in premises at 731 Broadway in 1861, occupied premises in Union Square before taking two storeys of showrooms in The Wilbraham, a fashionable block of bachelor flats at Fifth Avenue and 30th Street, that opened in 1890 to about 1920. And so it was from that location this set of plates would have first been purchased. While I wish there were at least 12 of them, the fact that 8 remain is a remarkable feat for antique plates and we're pleased to be able to set our table for 8 (and/or yours) with the gorgeous set. Granny Smith apple green with gold overlays, raised gold and a thick gold border - you've got all sorts of versatility with these. Layer them with glass plates, or florals heavy on the green, or with other raised gold plates in sizes appropriate to the course throughout your meal. Or just display them in your home as decorative accents to bring the color to your china hutch, your valance above dining room window, or flanking a mirror above the mantel in any room. Plates are no longer for table alone, remember. Very good to excellent condition, as shown. There might be a rub or two to the old thick gold enamel, but I have not found it yet. There are no chips or cracks, and no hairlines or crazing, no utensil marks. A beautiful set!
