Kaolin deposits near the region were purchased by King Louis XVI, who granted manufacturing privileges to the first Limoges factory in 1711. In 1842, David Haviland founded his factory and made Limoges the porcelain capital of France. Haviland became synonymous with the art of French luxury porcelain that endures today.
