Set Ten Antique Derby Cobalt Blue Dinner Plates England Circa 1825-30

About the Item

Each plate in this set of ten Derby dinner plates was hand painted with exquisite flowers in England circa 1825-1830. In the center of each plate, we see a loose bouquet of flowers, including pink roses, purple and yellow auricula, blue forget-me-nots, orange and yellow chrysanthemums, and a profusion of green leaves. The borders have three cartouches, each with a lovely spray of flowers. The deep cobalt blue ground is beautifully decorated with gilded floral forms. Small gilded dashes enliven the white edge. The plates are marked on the underside with the Derby crown in the underglaze iron red of the period. Dimensions: 10" diameter x 1" tall Condition: slight rubbing to the gilt and slight craquelure to the glazing Price: $880 Background of Derby Porcelain: Derby porcelain was first produced in the mid-18th century. In 1756 William Duesbury joined Andrew Planche and John Heath to create the Nottingham Road factory. The company was known as Derby Porcelain until 1775, when King George III granted the factory the honor of incorporating a crown into its back stamp, making it Crown Derby and later Royal Crown Derby.
