Antique Irish Sterling Silver Potato Dish Ring

About the Item

This exceptional antique Irish sterling silver dish ring* has a circular waisted form. The sterling silver body of the antique potato ring is embellished with impressive embossed, chased and pierced decoration incorporating cattle, structures and seated figures playing musical instruments, all amidst interlacing tree and scrolling leaf designs. The decoration to the body features a shaped vacant cartouche encompassed with a leaf festoon design. The flared upper and lower rims of the dish are encompassed with a leaf textured border. This antique dish ring retains the original removable blue glass liner. Such Irish examples with fine detailing are becoming increasingly difficult to locate and this is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. * The dish ring, also known as a potato ring, was introduced in the late 17th century and used to support a hot food dish on a table or sideboard; not only adding to the ornamentation but also protecting the surface against heat. Condition This antique potato ring is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and is in exceptional condition. The pierced, chased and embossed decoration is all very sharp. The original glass dish is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of the base are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique silverware. Dimensions Height 10.7cm/4.21" Diameter of rim 17.7cm/6.97" Diameter of base 20.5cm/8.07" Weight 14.4 troy ounces/447.3g (excluding glass liner) Maker: T Weir & Sons Date: 1932 Origin: Dublin, Ireland SKU: C8054

The dish can be used as a display object but it can also be proposed as a jewelry dish. Coralia is handcrafted by exceptional craftsmen in Istanbul, Turkey and it is intended to bring joy into our homes. The design was part of the Extraordinary objects collection. Extraordinary Objects are results of research work on form and function while questioning our relationship and interaction with everyday objects. These results are not ordinary shapes, but they are ordinary through their function, and they have to be understood before being used. Each collection is sculptural and has a different material and fabrication method. The designer explored various techniques and materials, from handcrafted glass to laser-cutting metal and 3D printed ceramics. Irina intends to make the visitors curious while inviting them to analyze, question, and interact with these sculptures differently and try to understand their functions. The ring dish...
