Art Nouveau Liqueur Carafes Set, 1900s, France, 37 cm

About the Item

A beautiful set of two antique carafes with two matching liqueur or wine glasses. In France at the beginning of the 20th century, particularly around 1900, carafes experienced a highlight of elegance and sophistication. This period, often known as the Belle Époque, was characterized by a quest for beauty and luxury, which was also reflected in the design of tableware such as carafes. Carafes from France around 1900 were characterized by their exquisite craftsmanship and variety of designs. While some carafes were simple and elegant in design, others featured opulent decorations and elaborate carvings. The shapes ranged from classic slender silhouettes to more complex, ornately curved designs influenced by the Art Nouveau movement. Carafes were not only used as containers for drinks such as wine, water or spirits, but also served as decorative elements on festive tables. They embodied the spirit of hospitality and prosperity and were often presented at social gatherings and banquets. The choice of carafe and the type of drink served on it were an expression of the style and taste of the host. The production of carafes around 1900 required a high degree of craftsmanship and technical know-how. French glassmakers used a variety of techniques, including mouth-blowing, shaping, cutting and engraving, to achieve the desired designs. Some carafes were even adorned with delicate enamel or gold decorations to emphasize their luxurious character. Today, carafes from France around 1900 are coveted collector's items and testify to the craftsmanship and aesthetic taste of the period. They are appreciated not only for their historical value, but also for their timeless beauty and elegance. These carafes are reminiscent of an era of opulence and cultural flourishing that enriched the French heritage of glass art.
