Rare Classic Biedermeier Gilded Count Buquoy Hyalith (True black) Scent Bottle

About the Item

An important and rare gilded low bodied scent bottle with crown shouldered neck and mitre stopper made by Count Boquoy in c1825 made in their revolutionary newly invented opaque true black glass - called Hyalith. A similar scent bottle was made slightly later by Harrach, but they simplified the design by having a flat rather than faceted top to the body of the bottle. Opaque black glass was invented by the Bohemian glassmaker Jirí von Buquoy (1781-1851) and was patented in 1817 they were based in Southern Bohemia, Stribrny Vrch (Silberberg) -Black glass was one of the first innovate techniques that put bohemian glassmaking on the map. Until it's invention it was thought that true black glass was impossible to make. N.B This is listed as Hararch as Count Buquoy pieces are so rare they do not appear on the 1stdibs list of possible makers
