In 1921 Lalique opened his Verrerie d'Alsace and this piece would have been one of the earliest pieces produced at the works. It is rare to find the VDA ( Verrerie d'Alsace) mark as this was only briefly used. The glassworks based in Wingen-Sur-Moder became one of the most significant glassworks in the history of glass and possibly the most significant of the 20th century. It is from this glassworks that the majority of Lalique's incredible contributions to glassware were produced. Eric Knowles Comments Following what eventually proved to be the ill fated Treaty of Versailles France demanded that the Alsace region, previously forfeited after the Franco Prussian War of 1870, be returned to France. The French government then set up cost effective business initiatives in the region to attract industry and commerce. Rene Lalique grasped the opportunity to set up a new state of the art glass works in a region that already had a reputation for glass making such as that located in Meisenthal and St Louis-les-Bitche in neighbouring province of Lorraine . As mentioned the first wares produced in the early 1920's were relief moulded with the relatively small VDA monogram.
