Dutch Arts & Crafts, Silver Plated Water Pitcher, 1900s

About the Item

Probably Dutch. Lavishly designed in the style of Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau, this outstanding handmade, hammered silver plated water pitcher was obviously crafted by a highly skilled silversmith. The hallmark on the bottom looks like a mill, surrounded by two smoking pipes on both sides facing opposite directions. There is also a (model) number - 3030. Excellent original condition with no dents, scratches or monograms. All the details are clear, with no removals, repairs or alterations. The pitcher has the soft, warm, original finish, with no buffing or machine polishing. Dimensions: Height: 8 1/4 inches Width: 9 1/2 inches Depth: 6 inches. The Arts & Crafts movement. The Arts & Crafts movement emerged during the late Victorian period in England, the most industrialized country in the world at that time. Anxieties about industrial life fueled a positive revaluation of handcraftsmanship and pre-capitalist forms of culture and society. Arts & Crafts designers sought to improve standards of decorative design, believed to be debased by mechanization; and to create environments in which beautiful and fine workmanship governed. The Arts & Crafts movement did not promote a particular style, but it did advocate reform as part of its philosophy and instigated a critique of industrial labor; as modern machines replaced workers, Arts & Crafts proponents called for an end to the division of labor and advanced the designer as artisan.
