Orangeade Silver Pitcher by Jean Puiforcat, French Art Moderne Collector Edition

About

Manufacturer: Puiforcat. Designer: Jean Puiforcat, 1930. Description: This outstanding pitcher is an iconic, sought-after piece from Puiforcat's portfolio. Widely published and exhibited, this piece of fine French silver designed in the Art Moderne era is a perfect illustration of the marriage of form and function as refined under France's standards of luxury. The subtle geometry and mirror finish of the silver contrast with the warm tones of the rosewood handle to produce a work of perfect harmony. A true testament to the skill of the silversmith, the spout of this piece is angled precisely to evoke the hull of the SS Normandie. The Art Deco style began in France, circa 1910 and was a total breakaway from Art Nouveau principles. Although it spread widely throughout Europe and the United States, the best examples of Art Deco silver were made in France. Designed in cubist or abstract forms, it sometimes incorporated influences from "primitive cultures" found in France's extensive colonial holdings. Some Art Deco silver was totally undecorated to emphasize its functional purpose and form, leading tastes towards machine age lines and subsequently Art Moderne. The clean and simple shapes of Art Deco and Art Moderne silver helped to clear the way for the styles that would follow. Purely functional Swedish design, where shapes and lines were pleasingly simple, gained immense popularity after 1945. Through the 1970s the artistry was gradually being restored to the ancient craft of the silversmith. New and innovative designs were created for hand-built, one-of-a-kind commissioned orders. The history of these pieces no longer only speak to functionality. The best examples have the deliberate intention of beautifying and enriching our lives whether or not intended for everyday use. Materials: Sterling silver, Brazilian rosewood. Dimensions: W 9.05 in x L 6.3 in x H 10.23 in.
