1920s British Serving Platters, Set of Three

About the Item

This elegant set of vintage ceramic plates includes two serving dishes and a perforated platter —a rare piece which was intended to collect the juices from a freshly cooked piece of meat as it was being served. Made in Britain in the 1920s, the china pattern is influenced by the Egyptian Revival aesthetic that was in vogue at the time. The design borrows the forms of lotus and papyrus flowers from ancient Egyptian artifacts and gives them a uniquely British twist, placing them among interlocking circles that evoke Celtic knots. The backstamp and the thin rim of gold leaf around the edge of each plate indicates that these were pieces of superior quality that would have been highly prized.
