19th C. Wedgwood Reticulated Basket Weave Oval Majolica Serving Tray

About the Item

An English majolica oval serving platter from Josiah Wedgwood, date marked R for the year 1889. The server is edged with a delicate yellow ochre reticulated rim that imitates the base ribbing of a basket. The rim meets the basketweave center glazed in the mottled tortoiseshell coloring of greens, brown, and ochre. The center of the server anchors the basketwork as it weaves its way concentrically towards the rim. The excellent mold work expected of Wedgwood along with rich, gorgeous color. The watery glazed verso has an applied footing. 10 in. L x 8.5 in. W x 1 in. H Impressed Wedgwood along with date codes for 1889. Incredible antique condition. The delicate rim is entirely intact.
