Set of 24 Silver Underplates

About the Item

Set of 24 silver underplates Continental, 20th Century Height 1.5cm, diameter 30cm This very refined set of twenty-four underplates (also called charger plates) was crafted in the 20th century. Entirely made from silver, this set would make a very elegant addition to one’s table setting. Each underplate is of a pared-down design, the piece acting as a ‘canvas’ for what is to be placed on top of it. The edges are wonderfully beaded, adding a subtle design feature. Plates holding all courses are to be placed on them, their large size ensuring all dishes will be elegantly displayed. Charger plates were first introduced in the medieval times. Their function is to prevent food staining the tablecloth, to retain the heat of the food placed on top of them as well as to protect the table from heat damage. The underplates are marked ‘N900’ and together weigh approximately 12,708 grammes. Their elegant design would make a superb addition to one’s formal dinner setting.

  • Antique Arabesque Steel Plate with Gold and Silver Inlay
    Located in London, GB
Antique Arabesque steel plate with gold and silver inlay. Continental, 19th century Dimensions: Height 2cm, diameter 32.5cm Beautifully crafted from steel with gold and silver damascening, this fine 19th century plate is profusely decorated with scrolling arabesque detailing. Around the rim of the plate, scrolling foliate vines and flowers are interspersed with four grotesque masks. The centre is similarly decorated, with intertwining scrolls, acanthus leaves, dolphin heads, and swans. There are also two coats of arms to the centre, which feature crowns and gold bows above. On one of the shields, the top half features a bird with its wings spread wide, with a church building to the bottom half. The other has an angel figure to the left and a double headed eagle to the right. The joining of two coats of arms in this manner often symbolizes the joining of two noble families in marriage, so the present plate could have been produced in celebration of a noble wedding. This manner of decoration is similar to that of Spanish metalworker Plácido Zuloaga...
