Castle Hedingham William II Medieval Style Art Pottery Jug
About the Item
An unusual Castle Hedingham medieval style pottery jug marked for William Rufus (William II, son of William the Conqueror) and made by Edward Bingham and dating from the 19th century. The Arts & Crafts period jug is of rounded bulbous form standing on a round unglazed foot with a narrow round shaped neck and small pouring spout with handle applied to the opposite side. The jug is decorated with a linear pattern band below a band with horseshoe designs and is decorated in tones of blue to the patterning on a mottled brown ground. The jug has a raised castle mark for Castle Hedingham Pottery and is unusually incised ‘W Rufus’ and is numbered 42 and 918.
