Parian group: Naomi and her Daughters-in-Law. Minton C1880

About the Item

One of the great parian figural groups. Parian is a form of pottery formulated to simulate marble, and it does it very well indeed. It was used extensively in the late 19th century to create authentic-looking sculptures, to help raise the taste and awareness of the middle classes. This elaborate group is particularly fine, and rarely is it found in perfect condition - hardly surprising, considering how many fine details are present. It Naomi and her Daughters-in-Law, popular figures from The Book of Ruth in the Old Testament. Naomi, her husband, and their two sons left Bethlehem due to famine and settled in Moab. Sadly, Naomi's husband died, leaving her with her two sons, who later married Moabite women named Orpah and Ruth. Tragically, Naomi's sons also passed away, leaving her widowed and childless in a foreign land. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, urging her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab and start anew. Orpah reluctantly agrees but Ruth insists on staying with Naomi, famously declaring, "Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God." Upon returning to Bethlehem, Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi's. Boaz notices Ruth's loyalty and kindness towards Naomi and eventually marries her, redeeming Naomi's family line. Ruth and Boaz have a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David, linking Ruth to the lineage of Jesus Christ.

  • Portland Vase, Northwood, Wedgwood, circa 1880
    By Wedgwood
    Located in Melbourne, Victoria
One of the finest copies of The Portland Vase that Wedgwood produced, in many ways rivalling the First Edition itself. Decorated by Thomas Lovatt, then cut, polished and shaded by John Northwood in his glass engraving studio. Although 30 copies were intended, the work was so exacting and arduous that in the end only thirteen were finished. The mirrored stand, which is included, is later and I think dates from the late 20th century. Of all the stands designed for the Portland Vase, this is the best I've seen. The original Portland vase, dating from around 200AD and made of cameo glass, is considered one of the most important examples of classical design and is noted for its intricate relief sculptures, which depict classical figures and scenes from Greek mythology - exactly what, though, we're not sure. The original Wedgwood Portland Vase...
