Regency Herculaneum Greek Pattern Blue Printed Pottery Dish

About the Item

Herculaneum Neo-classical large Greek pattern blue printed dish, Early-19th century The Herculaneum pottery underglaze blue central pattern shows aseries of images encicling an oval panel with a leafy vine. There are two main images, one with winged grifins attacking a woman in a chariot and the other large image is of three women drawn in a chariot by five horses. To the sides are various other figures. The border has a distictive Greek Key design with six oval panels, each with a different design of neo-classical design. Mark: Unmarked Dimensions: 17 1/8 inches x 13 inches x 2 inches The neo-classical “Greek” pattern, introduced in 1806, catered to the demand for classical subjects created by the Greek Revival style. The images were taken from “Outlines from the Figures and Compositions upon the Greek, Roman and Etruscan Vases of the late Sir William Hamilton; with engraved borders. Drawn and engraved by the late Mr. Kirk”.
