Staffordshire Pottery Transfer-Printed Pink-Lustreware Shell-Shaped Pitcher

About the Item

English Staffordshire pearlware shell-molded neo-Rococo style. Ewer or pitcher, with scalloped rims and broad handle, the long neck over the shel-form lower body, issuing a flaring foot, the neck transfer-printed in black with a large still life of fruit with birds flying nearby, with similar motifs to the upper inner rim and the handle, the entire body and the collar dipped (dipt) in pink lustreware glaze. The underside of the pitcher is marked with pattern name "Fruit No. 11," which the Transferware Collector's Club notes is an unknown pattern, ie the manufacturer is unidentified and unknown. Shell-shaped wares such as the unusual lower body of this pitcher derive from Rococo styling. Factories such as Wedgwood, Spode and Ridgway made many wares with fine shell modelling. The mould work of this example is less sophisticated than that found at the better factories and the body is slightly-over-fired. Several small towns along the river wear in Sunderland were famous for their production of lustrewares. The lustres were invented to imitate silver, gold, copper, etc for middle-class home consumption. The pink was distinctive and widely-popular. Unmarked other than the pattern name, circa 1830-1840. Measures: 9 5/8" H. 9 7/8" maximum W. 6 5/8" D. There is small area of crazing that has opened into staining in the deepest part of the interior foot. Minor wear to lustre and enamels.
