Talisman Vase by Sam Baron celebrates the Archaic Rituals of Sardinia

About the Item

There is a uniquely Sardinian concept of misfortune that divides our existence into the “world above” and the “world below”. The world above is the world of the living, but more precisely the world of safety, of shelter, of humans. The world below is a place that is murkier, where demons reside and where unexpected misfortune can befall you. These worlds are mirror images of each other and exist in one continuum. Inspired by the Carnevale rituals in which masked men fight, march and generally wreak havoc, dressed in heavy loud bells to scare away demons and bad harvests, Sam Baron has created a sonorous vase. Its shape is inspired by simple, ancient Nuragic vessels, and its side is covered with the same hand-shaped bells used in these ceremonies. The vase is crafted by artisan Walter Usai, a fifth generation potter. The Usai family's inter-generational story is only one of many in the small town of Assemini, known as one of the poles of Sardinian ceramic production. Walter's particular style is rooted in the inimitable texture that comes from his shaping of details and decorations. A master of form, he is able to create vases that are at once timeless and deeply rooted in Sardinian history. The bells are hand-shaped and then coated with bronze in a special firing technique specific to the mountain town of Tonara by the Floris Campanacci, a family-run business specializing in animal bells. As all of our collection is handmade by artisans, small inconsistencies may result in the finished product. These personal touches are what distinguish our objects from their Industrial counterparts.
