Teapot, Fruitbasket, William Greatbatch, circa 1770

About the Item

A classic Greatbatch teapot, with ear-shaped handle, in the form of a fruit basket. The fruit basket was emblematic of hospitality, being full of rare, exotic items. William Greatbatch was an English potter who lived from 1735 to 1813. He was born in Fenton, Staffordshire, and worked in the pottery industry for most of his life. He is particularly known for his work as a modeler, and his designs were highly sought after during his lifetime. Greatbatch's work was highly prized by his contemporaries, and he worked for many of the leading potteries of his time, including Wedgwood, Spode, and Adams. He is also known for his contributions to the development of new ceramic materials, particularly the production of creamware, which was a type of refined earthenware that became very popular in the late 18th century. Greatbatch's legacy continues to be celebrated today, and his work is highly prized by collectors and museums around the world. His influence on the art of pottery and ceramic design is still felt today, and his contributions to the development of new materials and decorative techniques continue to inspire and inform artists and designers in the field.
