Unique Ceramic Lidded Jar by Møller & Bøgely, Art Nouveau, Denmark, 1910s

About the Item

Beautiful handmade lidded jar made in Denmark between 1917-1920 at "Møller & Bøgely" workshop. The jar is made from earthenware and decorated using hand glazing and sgrafitto technique. The style is the Danish equivalent to Art Nouveau called "Skønvirke" recognized by a simplified ornamentation and use of plant and animal motifs. The lid is made in the shape of a snow covered mountain top. The inspiration from Japaneste traditional art is obvious and typical for this period. Signed "MB" and artist initials "SPI" in the lid. In the style of Thorvald Bindesbøll. Møller & Bøgely was founded in 1917 by the painter Eilif Møller and the architect Mads Peter Bøgely and was from the beginning a very ambitious factory producing ceramics of very high quality. Each item was to be unique and was created by different young and creative artists headhuntet by the two founders - among them was Swedish artist Berndt Friberg who later became one of Swedens leading ceramic artist at Gustavsberg. Unfortunately the factory burned to the ground in a chimney fire in 1920 and it was never rebuilt. Little is therefore know or documented about this important factory and for much of the 20th. century it was almost forgotten. Today items from Møller & Bøgely is considered collectors items and is highly sought after by everyone interested in the history of art ceramics.
