1700s Sterling Silver Picture Back Teaspoons
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive set of six antique Georgian sterling silver Hanoverian pattern picture back teaspoons - boxed; an addition to our silver cutlery and flatware collections
These fine antique George III silver teaspoons have been crafted in Hanoverian pattern.
The anterior surface of the table spoon handle is embellished with a pip to the terminal.
The reverse of each antique silver teaspoon bowl is embellished with a stemmed flower plant design, in addition to a rounded heel.
These exceptional silver picture back teaspoons are fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation case, securing with two hinged clasps.
NOTE: Silversmiths/spoon makers crafting a picture or fancy back spoon create the bowls with extra thickness to ensure the decoration does not display on the anterior surface. Developing from a simple detached-shell design, the picture (fancy) back spoons incorporated more complex scrolling designs, emanating through time to more elaborate assymetrical designs. After the mid-eighteenth century, Picture Back spoons began to evolve further to display policital and symbolic designs, in addition to a wide range of pictures from birds to agricultural implements.
Condition
These antique sterling silver teaspoons are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The picture-back bowls of these silver spoons are very sharp.
The hallmarks struck to the reverse of each stem are clear and as to be expected with the nature of the location; the date has been determined by the pattern and maker's registration information.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these 18th century picture/fancy back spoons.
