Georgian octagonal scarlet papier maché tray

About the Item

George III octagonal scarlet papier maché tray With gilt chinoiserie decoration and borders in 'India Rose' design, the underside inscribed with instructions to the decorator '32 Crimson Edge, India Rose Bottom, CE'. The raised canted sides pierced to form a pair of carrying handles. A tray of very good size and colour, trays with red ground are more unusual and decorative, the surface with craquelure patina. Likely made by Henry Clay of London when his new patent, taken out on 20 November 1772, for a ‘new Improved Paper-ware’. This involved pasting sheets of paper together and then oiling, varnishing and stove-hardening them. This process produced panels suitable for coaches, carriages, sedan chairs and furniture. It was claimed that the material could be ‘sawn, planed, dove-tailed or mitred in the same manner as if made in wood’. English, circa 1800
