LaGardo Tackett 'Tack' Modern Grouping of White Cups and Saucers Plus Creamer

About the Item

Mid-Century Modern set of white porcelain coffee set, a large grouping of 21 pieces. Consisting of 8 demitasse cups and saucers, 2 Irish coffee cups and saucers and one small creamer by Schmid International designed by LaGardo Tackett. Some pieces from 1959 and others 1960. They are under glaze stamped on the bottom: Tack Schmid porcelain either 1959 or 1960. The creamer is stamped: Ovenproof Ironstone 60 Tack. Condition: One demitasse cup has a chip on lower edge, pictured. The creamer, since it is ironstone, has some discoloration on bottom edge and some grazing on the glaze. Tackett was born in 1911 in Kentucky and died 1984 in Connecticut. He studied pottery making at The Claremont College in California and subsequently had studios in California, Japan and Connecticut during his lifetime. While in California, his creations were sold by Architectural Pottery along with the designs of David Cressey and Malcolm Leland. In 1953, Kenji Fujita became a partner for a short period and on his influence, the Tackett family decided to move to Kyoto, Japan for a few years before returning to California and once again in 1960 to Tokyo. In the early 1950s Tack and Virginia, his wife, met Paul Schmid, who was a large porcelain manufacturer in Boston and with whom they had a long prolific and successful partnership at Schmid International. Measurements: Demitasse 1 1/4 inches diameter x 3 7/8 inches high, Irish coffee 1 3/4 inches diameter x 4 inches high, creamer 1 1/2 inches diameter x 4 inches high.
